Buteyko practitioner in north London is Kathryn Godrey who will train you in the Buteyko method What is the Buteyko method?Buteyko breathing therapy provides safe, effective and drug-free help for people with asthma and other breathing related conditions including sinusitis, emphysema, persistent cough and anxiety.
Buteyko method is a breathing retraining programme which focuses on normalising your breathing pattern through a series of breathing exercises and techniques.
The techniques of the Buteyko method were developed in Russia in the 1970s where it is an accepted and known treatment. Buteyko is named after Russian professor Konstantin Buteyko who developed the therapy. During his medical training he found that the sicker a patient was the more they breathed. As a result he became interested in the connection between breathing and health and developed the Buteyko method which retrains breathing patterns with the ultimate aim of encouraging the patient to breathe less.
The Buteyko method is not a cure for asthma or other respiratory conditions but is a way of controlling and managing symptoms. During a course of treatment with a Buteyko practitioner, patients learn a series of breathing exercises which reduce their breathing. The therapy also focuses on the patient learning techniques for managing and controlling their symptoms which are gradually incorporated into every day life and routine.
The exercises do not need to be performed daily indefinitely. Once symptoms have been brought under control, the exercises can be used as a first response to symptoms. Patients are encouraged to recognise what triggers their symptoms and to be prepared to use the Buteyko exercises as prevention.
Buteyko breathing therapy is well established in Australia and New Zealand and is gradually becoming more recognised and used here in the UK.
Most people will need to see a Buteyko breathing therapist for five weekly sessions with a follow-up appointment a few weeks later. For those with more chronic asthma or other long-term conditions, a longer course of treatment may be required.
The Buteyko method is suitable for both adults and children. Children often respond very quickly to breathing retraining as their breathing habit is less well established.

Scientific evidence In common with other complementary or alternative therapies which are not drug-based, it is difficult to fund research. However there has been limited but positive research studies looking at the effects of Buteyko.
A respiratory consultant in Australia carried out one of the main Buteyko trials on patients with asthma. The results of this three-month trial found that the group of people using the Buteyko reduced their use of bronchodilator inhalers by 90%.
A similar trial which followed people for six months found a similar reduction in broncholdilator inhaler use as well as a nearly 50% cut in the use of steroid inhalers.
