Acupuncture as used in Traditional Chinese Medicine is the ancient art of using needles at certain points along the energy or Qi meridians of the body. The practitioner makes a traditional diagnosis from what is often a complex pattern of disharmony. The exact pattern and degree of disharmony is unique to each individual so each person has a personalised treatment plan. Acupuncture is concerned with restoring balance and harmony to the whole body. It not only addresses the flow of Qi and blood and the functioning of the organs, but also the balance of Yin and Yang. When these become unbalanced, illness may result. By inserting fine needles into the acupuncture points, the practitoner can stimulate the body's own healing response and help restore its natural balance. The flow of Qi can be disturbed by a number of factors. These include emotional states such as anxiety, stress, anger, fear or grief, poor nutrition, weather conditions, hereditary factors, toxins and trauma. With my naturopathy practice I find Chinese medicine diagnosis an invaluable aid in understanding the pattern of an illness, and the treatment can restore normality and offer relief within a short space of time. The principle aim of acupuncture in treating the whole person is to recover the equilibrium between the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of the individual. Acupuncture can be used to treat a wealth of conditions that contribute to a person's ill health. Some of these conditions are:
Techniques used include needle insertion, moxa (topical hot herbal application) and cupping. What Can You Expect? The first appointment includes a consultation and takes an hour. We will discuss your health and lifestyle while a full case history is taken. This is followed by an examination using traditional chinese medicine techniques such as tongue and pulse diagnosis. If necessary some palpation will also be done. Other more western types of diagnosis may also be undertaken. I will explain your condition to you and follow this with the treatment. The discussion may include dietary and lifestyle recommendations, so that you can take control of returning your body to good health. Follow up appointments are for 45 minutes and are initially required weekly until improvement is achieved. Treatments can then be spaced out as necessary.
