    What Happens During A Treatment?

The initial session last for 1¼ hours. You will be asked about your health, lifestyle, diet, moods etc and will have an opportunity to ask questions and discuss whatever you think relevant. This will be followed by a treatment. This usually consists of fine needles being gently placed along energy channels of the body.

Other techniques may also be used such as:

Moxabustion – warming using mugwort herb – a very pleasant, relaxing experience

Electro-acupuncture – using a small device similar to a tens machine – creates a tingling sensation

Ear acupuncture – very often used for those who want to quit smoking or control eating addictions

Facial acupuncture - used in facial rejuvenation treatments

An initial course of treatment will be agreed. This will often consist of 5 treatments at weekly intervals, with a review of progress on the 5th. This may be followed by more treatments if required. All treatments apart from the first last 45 minutes.

    Commonly Asked Questions

    Does it hurt?
Most people feel a tiny prickling sensation followed by a warm glow.

Where do you put the needles>
The most commonly used points are on the arms, legs and back.

    Is it safe?
Yes, the needles are used once only and then disposed of.

    Does it work?
Much scientific research is demonstrating positive benefits for acupuncture.

How will I feel after a treatment?
Relaxed usually. Sometimes a bit sleepy temporarily, sometimes energized.

How many treatments will I need?
Generally, the longer you’ve had a condition, the more treatments you may require. This will be discussed during your initial treatment.

Can I have acupuncture if I’m taking prescribed medication?
Yes. Acupuncture may enable you to reduce or stop taking medication but you would need to consult with your doctor about this.

Is there anything I should or shouldn’t do before or after treatment?
Don’t have a large meal or alcohol just before treatment. Avoid strenuous exercise for at least a few hours after treatment. Alcohol will have a stronger effect just after treatment.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is an ancient system of medicine that has been constantly evolving and used for more than 3000 years. It is truly holistic treating all aspects of the individual: body, energy and mind.

According to TCM theory disease occurs when there is a disruption or blockage to the balance and flow of our natural energy (Qi). This may be caused by external factors such as the weather and diet, or by internal factors such as emotional disharmonies. In order to remedy these disruptions a number of techniques are used such as acupuncture, moxabustion, cupping, Chinese herbal medicine and tui na massage.

    Acupuncture
Originating from China, acupuncture aims to correct and balance Qi flow through pathways, called meridians around the body. Imbalances in the flow of Qi can result in both physical and psychological disorders. Fine needles are inserted into various points in the body. Where the needles are placed depends on detailed and subtle diagnosis unique to the condition of each individual.

    Japanese Acupuncture
Japanese physicians have refined and created techniques and ideas that differed from the Chinese. Needling techniques generally involve thinner or smaller needles and employ shallower insertions. Non-insertive techniques are also used. There are many feedback mechanisms, enabling both patient and practitioner to evaluate changes during the treatment session. Tight and tender points on the abdomen, as part of the diagnosis, can be released instantaneously. Improvements to symptoms are often experienced during the treatment.

    Moxabustion
Targeted points on the body are warmed by directly or indirectly burning herbs on them. This method is often used to promote the flow of Qi and Blood in disorders with a Cold nature. It is also used to emphasise certain acupuncture points and to warm large areas of the body.

    Cupping
Mild suction is applied to acupuncture points using glass, plastic or bamboo cups. Cupping is often combined with other treatments and leaves you feeling like you have had a deep and satisfying massage.

    Chinese herbal medicine
According to your condition, a specialised formula may be prescribed for you. You will need to work closely with your therapist as the formula will be adapted as required as your condition evolves and improves. You can take herbal medicines in the form of decoctions, capsules or pills.

    Tui Na massage
This massage technique is used together with acupuncture therapy and is also a very powerful treatment in its own right. Many different massage and manipulation techniques are employed in order to treat a variety of conditions from musculoskeletal disorders to insomnia and palpitations. Specific points are targeted in much the same way as acupuncture. Richard specialises in combining Tui Na with acupuncture treatments.

Acupuncture as used in Traditional Chinese Medicine is the ancient art of using needles at certain points along the energy or Qi meridians of the body.

The practitioner makes a traditional diagnosis from what is often a complex pattern of disharmony. The exact pattern and degree of disharmony is unique to each individual so each person has a personalised treatment plan.

Acupuncture is concerned with restoring balance and harmony to the whole body. It not only addresses the flow of Qi and blood and the functioning of the organs, but also the balance of Yin and Yang. When these become unbalanced, illness may result.

By inserting fine needles into the acupuncture points, the practitoner can stimulate the body's own healing response and help restore its natural balance.

The flow of Qi can be disturbed by a number of factors. These include emotional states such as anxiety, stress, anger, fear or grief, poor nutrition, weather conditions, hereditary factors, toxins and trauma.

With my naturopathy practice I find Chinese medicine diagnosis an invaluable aid in understanding the pattern of an illness, and the treatment can restore normality and offer relief within a short space of time.

The principle aim of acupuncture in treating the whole person is to recover the equilibrium between the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of the individual.

Acupuncture can be used to treat a wealth of conditions that contribute to a person's ill health. Some of these conditions are:

    • asthma
    • arthritis
    • allergic rhinitis
    • sinusitis
    • emotional problems
    • anxiety and stress
    • menstrual problems
    • headache
    • backpain
    • digestive problems including constipation and diarrhoea
    • coughs and colds
    • infertility
    • skin problems
    • insomnia
    • fatigue and tiredness
    • constant infection
      and much more
Regular acupuncture treatments can also just keep you feeling at your best.

Techniques used include needle insertion, moxa (topical hot herbal application) and cupping.

    What Can You Expect?
The first appointment includes a consultation and takes an hour. We will discuss your health and lifestyle while a full case history is taken. This is followed by an examination using traditional chinese medicine techniques such as tongue and pulse diagnosis. If necessary some palpation will also be done. Other more western types of diagnosis may also be undertaken.

I will explain your condition to you and follow this with the treatment. The discussion may include dietary and lifestyle recommendations, so that you can take control of returning your body to good health.

Follow up appointments are for 45 minutes and are initially required weekly until improvement is achieved. Treatments can then be spaced out as necessary.
