According to TCM theory disease occurs when there is a disruption or blockage to the balance and flow of our natural energy (Qi). This may be caused by external factors such as the weather and diet, or by internal factors such as emotional disharmonies. In order to remedy these disruptions a number of techniques are used such as acupuncture, moxabustion, cupping, Chinese herbal medicine and tui na massage. Acupuncture Originating from China, acupuncture aims to correct and balance Qi flow through pathways, called meridians around the body. Imbalances in the flow of Qi can result in both physical and psychological disorders. Fine needles are inserted into various points in the body. Where the needles are placed depends on detailed and subtle diagnosis unique to the condition of each individual. Japanese Acupuncture Japanese physicians have refined and created techniques and ideas that differed from the Chinese. Needling techniques generally involve thinner or smaller needles and employ shallower insertions. Non-insertive techniques are also used. There are many feedback mechanisms, enabling both patient and practitioner to evaluate changes during the treatment session. Tight and tender points on the abdomen, as part of the diagnosis, can be released instantaneously. Improvements to symptoms are often experienced during the treatment. Moxabustion Targeted points on the body are warmed by directly or indirectly burning herbs on them. This method is often used to promote the flow of Qi and Blood in disorders with a Cold nature. It is also used to emphasise certain acupuncture points and to warm large areas of the body. Cupping Mild suction is applied to acupuncture points using glass, plastic or bamboo cups. Cupping is often combined with other treatments and leaves you feeling like you have had a deep and satisfying massage. Chinese herbal medicine According to your condition, a specialised formula may be prescribed for you. You will need to work closely with your therapist as the formula will be adapted as required as your condition evolves and improves. You can take herbal medicines in the form of decoctions, capsules or pills. Tui Na massage This massage technique is used together with acupuncture therapy and is also a very powerful treatment in its own right. Many different massage and manipulation techniques are employed in order to treat a variety of conditions from musculoskeletal disorders to insomnia and palpitations. Specific points are targeted in much the same way as acupuncture. Richard specialises in combining Tui Na with acupuncture treatments.
